Last weekend, we watched the international EBT (European BeachHandball Tournament) tournament at the Gibi Šport venue in Ljubljana. The tournament was also considered to be the national beach handball championship. A total of 9 teams entered in the men’s category, of which 6 were Slovenian, and 7 teams (all Slovenian) competed in the women’s category. We supported the event and thus co-enabled the organization of the event.

What is beach handball anyway?
Beach handball is the most attractive derivative of handball, which has been growing in the last fifteen years and is gaining an ever-widening circle of followers and players. Due to the desire to follow modern trends in the development of the handball game, five years ago the Handball Association of Slovenia started the project “Beach Handball”, the purpose and goals of which are to popularize the sport in Slovenia. The Association holds annual national championships and forms national teams that achieve great results. (source: http://www.rokometna-zveza.si)
Due to the growing interest of handball players, more teams decide to compete every year in the competitions for the national championship. On the basis of the performances of individuals at the national championships, they formed women’s and men’s national teams, which participated in the Mediterranean Games in 2015 and achieved an enviable 5th and 8th place. In the coming years, the goal of national teams and national teams of younger selections is to participate in the European Championships and qualify for the World Championships.
Let’s get to the point of the game.
The beach handball court is 27 meters long and 12 meters wide, and there must be at least 25 centimetres of sand on the ground. The goalkeeper’s space is the same as on an ordinary handball court, 6 m long and 12 m wide. The goal is 2 m high and 3 m wide. To choose a goal, the team is selected in the same way as for indoor handball, by tossing a coin. The playing time is much shorter: 2 10 minutes half-times with a 5-minute break.
